SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held off a late push by Shepherd, 64-60, to wrap up the No. 2 seed in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament in Charleston.
The Falcons will open tournament play on Friday afternoon at noon against the winner of the Notre Dame College and West Virginia State opening round game on Tuesday evening.
With the win, FSU finished the regular season with a 19-9 overall record and a 16-6 mark in the Mountain East Conference. Shepherd wraps up the regular season with a 14-14 overall record and 9-13 mark in the league.
Although the Falcons were limited to 40 percent from the floor, FSU turned the ball over just 11 times and knocked down 19-of-31 free throws in the win. Wheeling shot 47 percent from the floor but made just seven free throws out of 10 attempts and turned the ball over 17 times.
Nick Harney recorded a double-double to lead the Falcons with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Caleb Davis came off the bench to score 13 points and also forced three turnovers defensively.
Jamel Morris (12) and
Thomas Wimbush (10) also reached double figures.
Ryan McTavish led Shepherd with 14 points while senior Austin Cunningham recorded 13 points. AJ Carr led SU on the glass with seven rebounds and Steffen Davis passed out five assists.
After FSU led by as many as 14 points early in the second half, Shepherd trimmed the advantage to just two points, 53-51, with 8:08 remaining in the game. The Falcons stopped the comeback with a quick 11-0 run, capped by a three from Morris, to push their lead back to 62-51 with just under six minutes remaining.
Shepherd trimmed the FSU advantage to just four late in the game but couldn't get any closer as FSU wrapped up the 64-60 victory.
