Morris Drains Nine Threes To Lead FSU Past NDC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jamel Morris drained nine three-pointers and scored  a game-high 32 points to lead Fairmont State past Notre Dame College, 71-57, on Friday afternoon at the Charleston Civic Center. Morris's nine threes set a MEC Tournament single-game record.

The Falcons improve to 20-9 on the season and advance to the semifinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament against the winner of the second quarterfinal of the day between Concord and Wheeling Jesuit. Game time for the semifinal game is 8:15 on Saturday night.

With the win, head coach Jerrod Calhoun wrapped up his third-consecutive 20-win season and advanced to the semifinal round of the conference tournament for the third time in as many years.

In addition to Morris's performance, Thomas Wimbush was just shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds while Nick Harney added 12 points and 10 boards for the double-double. Shammgod Wells passed out a team-high five assists as the Falcons tallied 16 assists on 22 made field goals.

Notre Dame (16-14) was led by 15 points apiece from Lawrence DeArmond and Tyree Gaiter in the loss. Will Vorhees also reached double figures with 10 and Oliver Megins pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

NDC held a slim advantage in field goal percentage, shooting 42.2 percent from the floor compared to 41.5 for Fairmont State. However, Notre Dame was limited to just 4-of-16 from three-point range. FSU turned the ball over just eight times and knocked-down 17-of-19 free throw attempts.

Morris scored 12 of Fairmont's first 18 points after draining his first four three-point attempts in the game. The Falcons also played smothering defense in the opening half by limiting NDC to just 22 points and eight field goals. After a tie at the 19:18 mark, Fairmont State led for the rest of the opening half before taking a 31-22 advantage into the locker room.

There was much more offense in the second half as NDC trimmed the halftime margin to just three points at the midway point of the half. Fairmont State answer the comeback with an 11-3 run, that included two more threes from Morris, to take control of the game with just 5:40 remaining. Notre Dame couldn't cut the lead to fewer than nine the rest of the way before FSU pushed the final margin to 71-57.
