CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State advanced to the 2015 Mountain East Conference Championship Game by picking up a 73-63 victory over sixth-seeded Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday night inside the Charleston Civic Center.
Fairmont State (21-9) will meet Glenville State, who upset top-seeded West Liberty in the first semifinal on Saturday, in Sunday afternoon's championship game at 3:30 p.m. in Charleston. Wheeling Jesuit's season comes to an end with a 21-10 record.
The Falcons shot 48 percent from the floor and knocked down 17-of-22 (77.3%) free throw attempts in the victory. Fairmont State also put together another solid defensive performance, holding the league's second-best scoring offense to just 63 points and 19 field goals in the game. WJU was solid from the free throw line, making 23-of-28 attempts (82.1%) but made just a pair of three-pointers.
In addition, Fairmont State also forced 15 Wheeling Jesuit turnovers and the Cardinals had only five assists. WJU had a 39-28 advantage on the boards.
Jamel Morris and
Nick Harney each recorded 16 points to lead the Falcons in the victory. Morris went 3-of-5 from behind the arc and Harney just missed a double-double by pulling down nine boards.
Caleb Davis was huge down the stretch for the Falcons as he added 15 points in the victory.
Thomas Wimbush also reached double figures with 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Pat Moseh with 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Eric Siefert chipped in 18 points and Haywood Highsmith recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
In the first half, Fairmont held WJU to just seven field goals and 29 percent from the field to grab a 35-29 advantage at the break. The Cardinals were able to keep the lead in single digits by going 14-of-17 from stripe. Harney and Wimbush each scored 10 points in the opening half for the Falcons.
In the second half, Fairmont State pushed its lead out to 12 points at the 12:41 mark after a three from Morris and held all of the momentum in the game. However, a 12-4 run by Wheeling over the next six minutes put the Cardinals within four with just 6:03 remaining.
Over the next three minutes, however, Davis scored eight of Fairmont State's next ten points to help stretch the lead back to double-figures at the 2:58 mark. In the final two minutes after Wheeling scored on back-to-back positions, FSU went 9-of-12 from the free throw line to help seal the 73-63 win and a spot in the MEC finals.
