URBANA, Ohio -- Jamel Morris scored 30 points and the Falcons buried 10 three-pointers in a 94-86 victory over Urbana on Thursday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Warren G. Grimes Center.
In addition to Morris' 30-point performance,
Nick Harney recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while
Chase Morgan added 18 for the Falcons (16-6, 13-3 MEC).
Thomas Wimbush also recorded a double-double for FSU with 14 points and a team-high 12 boards and
Shammgod Wells chipped in 10 points and five assists. The Falcons only got four points from their bench in the victory.
Urbana (5-17, 2-14 MEC) was led by Matt Csuhran with 22 points in the loss. Carlas Jackson chipped in 15, Myles Busby and Ognjen Rebic each had 15 and Isaiah Phillips added 12 for the Blue Knights. Rebic also had a team-high 11 rebounds and six assists for UU. Urbana had 17 assists on 20 made baskets in the opening half and finished the game with 23 assists.
Both teams struggled on the defensive end with Urbana shooting 54 percent from the field and FSU shooting 49 percent. The teams also combined for just 15 turnovers and were even on the glass with 32 rebounds apiece. Urbana held a 46-34 advantage scoring in the paint.
UU shot 62.5 percent from the field in the opening half and led by as many as 12 at the 12:26 mark before FSU cut the halftime margin to five at 48-43. Csuhran went 6-of-9 from the field and scored 15 points in the opening half to pace UU. Morris led the Falcons in the opening 20 minutes with 16 points after knocking down four three-pointers.
Nick Harney was also well on his way to another double-double with 10 points and seven boards in the half.
To open up the second half, Wells drove to the hole for a layup and Morgan drained a three in the first minute and a half to tie the game at 48-48. With the game still tied at the 14:15 mark, FSU went on a 12-0 run over a three-minute stretch to grab its first double-digit advantage of the night, 68-56. Morgan and Morris each knocked-down threes to key the run for the Falcons.
Fairmont State's lead would remain between 6-and-10 the rest of the game except for the 1:34 mark when a layup by Phillips cut the lead to just four. However, an 8-of-8 performance from the foul line in the final 1:14 of the game wrapped up the 94-86 victory for the Falcons.
FSU will now have an off day before traveling to Notre Dame College for a 3 p.m. tip.
