Falcons, Yellow Jackets Split To Open Series

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State and West Virginia State split on Sunday afternoon to open up a four-game Mountain East Conference series at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

With the split, FSU moves to 2-10 overall and 2-8 in the league. WV State is now 5-8 overall and 5-5 in the MEC.

Game one of the series features two great pitching performances in a game that remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Corey Lilly (1-3) picked up the victory on the hill for the Falcons, striking out nine batters and allowing just four hits in the shutout. Russell Thompson (2-1) suffered the loss for WVSU after giving up the only run of the game and just four FSU hits. Thompson sat down seven Fairmont State batters on strikes.

After a single by Alex Levitan and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Whitmore to move the Falcons into scoring position, Sam Orr singled up the middle to bring in the game-winning run in the sixth inning. WV State had runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the game and gave FSU the 1-0 victory.

After being held scoreless in the first game of the day, the Yellow Jackets got on the board quick in game two when Trayvis Patterson singled up the middle to bring in a pair of runs for the WVSU. The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Jamison Jones hit an RBI single to push the visitors lead to 3-0 with only the bottom half of the inning left for FSU to rally.

In the bottom of the seventh, FSU had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Jackets got out of the jam with a timely strikeout by Josh Falbo. WV State also stranded two FSU runners in the sixth to hold off the Falcons and pick up the 3-0 win.

Eric Roberts earned the victory on the mound for WV State after allowing just two hits in five and a quarter innings. Falbo earned his second save of the season after closing out the game for WVSU.

Ryan Badertscher went the distance for FSU, sitting down four WVSU batters and allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work.

The teams will play games three and four of the series on Monday afternoon back at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
