Falcons Drop Two, Fall In Extra Innings In Game Two

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan opened up a four-game Mountain East Conference series on Wednesday morning at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex because of the threat of heavy rain on Friday throughout the day.

Fairmont State (4-18, 4-16 MEC) dropped both games, starting with a 7-1 decision in game one. In the second game of the day, the teams were forced to go nine innings because of a dead-locked score. The tie was eventually broken when the games winning run was walked in the top of the ninth inning for the Bobcats.

The teams combined for 19 hits in the opening game, with WVWC holding the 11-8 advantage over the Falcons. Jacob Whitmore tied a 1-0 game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single into right field to bring Maverick Keller home from third.

After Wesleyan (9-8, 8-8 MEC) added a single run in the fourth, Michael Logsdon sent a two-run home run to deep right center and keyed a stretch of six unanswered runs for the 'Cats to lock up the 7-1 victory. Longsdon recorded four of the teams six RBI for the Bobcats and Corey Lynn went 4-of-4 with a runs scored out of the third spot of the batting order.

After the Bobcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning of game two, the Falcons rallied with a three-run, fourth inning to pull ahead mid-way through the game. Keller started the scoring with an RBI single to left field before a run was walked and scored on a wild pitch later in the frame.

In the sixth inning, WVWC jumped back in front with RBI singles from Tre Kerns and Nick Jones to give the 'Cats a 5-4 advantage. The Falcons refused to quit though, as Alex Levitan hit a sacrifice fly with a runner in scoring position to knot the game at 5-5 and force extra innings after a scoreless seventh.

The Bobcats eventually wrapped up the 6-5 win when Kelly Machuca was walked home in the ninth.

Both teams will now have Friday off before wrapping up the series on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. Saturday is Family Day at the ballpark with several special events taking place during the game. For more information, click here!
