CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Fairmont State split a pair of matches on day two of the California (Pa.) Vulcan Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Hamer Hall.
Following the weekend tournament, the Falcons are now 4-3 on the season.
In the first match of the day, the Falcons picked up a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Bridgeport (Conn.). FSU was led in the match by
Kaitlyn Witsaman with 10 kills and a .391 attacking percentage.
Courtney Kress and
Erin Harwood each chipped in nine kills for the Falcons.
Jessica Furda finished the match with 36 assists and 10 digs while libero
McKinley Romp tallied a team-best 13 digs.
In the second match of the afternoon, the Falcons took the first set from Clarion, 25-19, before the Golden Eagles won three-straight sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-16) to pick up the win. Harwood led FSU against Clarion, recording 13 kills, 14 digs and seven aces in the four-set match. Kress also reached double-digit kills against CU with 11. Furda guided the FSU offense with 34 assists in the match and Romp led the team once again with 15 digs.
After having just a .140 attacking percentage in the opening set, Clarion had at least a .375 attacking percentage in the final three sets.
The Falcons will travel to West Liberty next weekend for an in-region challenge event, meeting four opponents from the PSAC. FSU will open the weekend against Seton Hill at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
