FSU Tops West Liberty With Late Touchdown, 36-30

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- A three-yard touchdown run by Austin White with 36 seconds remaining lifted Fairmont State to a 36-30 victory over West Liberty on Thursday night at Duvall-Rosier Field.

The three-yard run by White, capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive for the Falcons. Cooper Hibbs took-off for 33 yards on a play-action keeper play on fourth-and-two to keep the game-winning drive alive for the Falcons. On the following WLU possession, Emanuel Ivey picked-off the Hilltoppers with just 12 seconds remaining to end any comeback hopes for West Liberty.

The Falcons (1-2, 1-2) took advantage of seven Hilltopper turnovers after coming into the game without forcing a turnover on the season. The FSU defense had five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Marcus Porter, and recovered two fumbles on the night. After opening the season with a win over No. 9 Concord, West Liberty (1-2, 1-1) has lost two-straight contests.

Cooper HIbbs went 22-of-38 for 187 yards and two touchdowns and engineered the game-winning drive with 2:24 left in the game. Hibbs also had a career-high 85 yards rushing and one touchdown. Austin White added 98 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown to lead the FSU ground attack, and Brandon Boyd hauled in seven catches for 77 yards. Fabian Guerra added six receptions for 54 yards and hauled in a touchdown pass for the fourth-straight games, dating back to last season.

In addition to his pick-six, Porter also led FSU in tackles with nine, including seven solos. Jacob Jean-Charles also chipped in six solos stops, an interception, and a forced fumble on a quarterback sack. Redshirt-freshman Josh Ballard also recorded a pair of turnovers for FSU, picking off a pass and forcing a fumble.

The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance by WLU's Jeremiah Ortiz who rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries with one touchdown. Daree' Goodwin had six catches for 97 yards and a pair of scores. However, with starter Dakota Conwell out for the game, the 'Topper quarterback tandem of Dylan LaGarde and Brenton Colabella were just 13-of-23 for 206 yards and five interceptions.

Linebacker Jed Fue led West Liberty with nine tackles (seven solo), including two for a loss. Zach Barnes added three tackles for a loss in the game.

FSU will be idle next weekend before traveling to Urbana on Saturday, Oct. 3 for a noon kickoff.
