FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College, 3-1, in its 2015 home opener on Friday evening at Joe Retton Arena. The match also opened Mountain East Conference play for both teams.
The Falcons opened up with a 25-17 victory in set one before Wesleyan evened the match with a 25-22 advantage in the second set. The Falcons took control of the match from that point, defeating the Bobcats 25-17 and 25-20 to pick up the win.
FSU had four players reach double-figures, led by senior
Kaitlyn Witsaman with 13 kills and 18 digs.
Erin Harwood and
Courtney Kress added 12 kills apiece and
Kayla Smith chipped in 10. Harwood added 20 digs to her 12-kill performance while Smith added 16 digs and six total blocks to her 10 kills to stuff the stat sheet.
Breanna Blot also tallied six total blocks in the match to go along with seven kills. Setter
Jessica Furda passed-out 49 assists and 12 digs and libero
Megan Clerico recorded a team-best 30 digs.
The Bobcats were led by Stacie Baumann with 12 kills in the losing effort. Hannah Moore led WVWC with 25 digs and Katlyn Buckland (24) and Emily Means (14) each had double-figure assists.
The Falcons will remain at home to host Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
