Falcons Survive With Morris' Late Three

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jamel Morris' three with four seconds remaining lifted fifth-ranked Fairmont State to a 66-65 victory over the University of Charleston on Sunday evening at the Charleston Civic Center. The game-winning three was set-up by an inbounds play coming out of a Fairmont State timeout with under five seconds to play.

The win lifts Fairmont State's record to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain East Conference. UC falls to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the league.

The Falcons trailed by as many as nine (49-40) at the 11:54 mark of the second half but a 12-2 run over the next five minutes gave the Falcons a one-point advantage with just over seven to play. Matt Bingaya paced FSU during the run with eight of Fairmont's 12 points.

The next five minutes remained close but UC was able to push its lead back to five at 62-57 after a layup by Jevonte Hughes and a pair of free throws from Cameron Dozier.

On the next two FSU possessions, however, Bingaya finished down low to cut the lead back to one (62-61) with just 53 ticks remaining. Tino Ditrapano went one-of-two from the line on the next UC possession to push the lead back to a pair at the 47 second mark.

On the next possession for each team, Jason Jolly (FSU) and Aleksander Kesic (UC) each knocked-down a pair of free throws and the Golden Eagle lead remained at two with just 16 seconds remaining.

After two missed shots and two offensive rebounds for the Falcons, head coach Jerrod Calhoun called a timeout with under five seconds to play to draw-up one final attempts for FSU. Morris received the inbounds pass and drained the game-winning three, putting the Falcons ahead 66-65.

Ditrapano had one final look for UC, but the shot rimmed out as time expired and the Falcons closed out the come-from-behind win.

Fairmont State shot 45.6 percent from the field but struggled from behind the arc, making just 5-of-26 attempts. FSU also made just 9-of-18 free throw attempts.

The FSU offense was led by a double-double performance from Bingaya with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Morris also finished in double-figures with 15 points, including the game-winning three. Troy Cantrell also chipped in eight points and five rebounds and Jolly added seven points off the bench for the Falcons.

UC was led by Dozier with 15 points and got 13 from Hughes off the bench. Jaylen Hinton also reached double-figures with 10.

The Falcons will now prepare for another MEC matchup on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. on the road at West Virginia State.
