Fairmont State Handles UVa-Wise In 62-Point Win

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- No. 7 Fairmont State opened 2016 by rolling to a 62-point victory over the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 110-48, on Monday night at Joe Retton Arena.

The margin of victory is the second-largest since head coach Jerrod Calhoun took over the program four seasons ago. The largest margin of victory under Calhoun came in his second season, when FSU defeated Ohio-Eastern, 114-48, picking up a 66-point win at Joe Retton Arena.

The first six minutes of the game were competitive before a 17-1 run by Fairmont State that started at the 14:19 mark of the opening half allowed the Falcons to open up a double-digit lead for good. The first six minutes of the game had five lead changes before FSU began to roll.

Fairmont State (10-1, 4-1 MEC) got a team-high 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from Taiwo Badmus, which is 10 points above his career-high of eight that he scored last February against the Cavs. The Falcons also got 14 points off four three-pointers from Jamel Morris and 12 points and seven rebounds from Matt Bingaya to lead the FSU starters.

R.J. Hutcherson also recorded a career-high in both points (13) and rebounds (12) off the bench for the Falcons. It marks the second-straight game that Hutcherson set a career-high, as the redshirt-freshman scored eight at Winston-Salem State on Dec. 19.

The Falcons shot over 50 percent from the field (41-of-79), over 40 percent from three (14-of-34) and over 80 percent from the free throw line (14-of-17) in the win. The Falcons also held a 54-27 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds and 33 second-chance points.

Defensively, the Falcons forced 26 UVa-Wise turnovers and scored 40 points-off turnovers, in addition to holding the Cavs to just 48 points in the game. FSU's 49 first-half points outscored UVa-Wise's game total of 48 points.

UVa-Wise (2-9, 0-5 MEC) did not have a single player reach double-figure, as the Cavs were led by Dimitri Sousa and Lashain Matthews with eight points apiece.
