Falcons Grind Out Double Overtime Win Over Cavs, 86-82

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State grinded out an 86-82 double overtime victory over UVa-Wise, 86-82, on Monday evening at Joe Retton Arena.

The Falcons picked up a critical Mountain East Conference victory with the win, as FSU came into the game with just a 1-3 mark in league play. FSU is now 8-3 overall. The Cavs slip to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the league.

All five starters reached double-figures for the Falcons, led by Makenzie White with 19 points and seven rebounds. White fouled out of the game early in the first overtime. The Falcons also got 18 points from Emily Puskarich, 16 from Deidra Combs, 14 from Amanda Ruffner and 10 from Gabrielle Etter. Combs also added eight rebounds and five assists to her stat line and Ruffner swatted a team-best four shots for FSU.

Both teams shot over 45 percent from the floor in the game but one of the major difference came from the charity stripe. The Falcons nailed 19-of-22 free throw attempts (86.4%) in the win compared to just 15-of-23 for UVa-Wise. The Cavs held a 50-40 scoring advantage in the paint and also outrebounded FSU by one (37-36). The Falcons recorded eight blocked shots and 13 steals defensively in the win.

Taylor Sandidge led all scorers with 27 points for the Cavs. Kayla Carey also reached double figures with 10 but Blair Harding was held to just nine points and eight rebounds.

The Cavs had an 81-78 lead in the second overtime before Emily Puskarich hit a three to tie it up. The Falcons then outscored UVa-Wise 5-1 down the stretch - all on free throws - to secure the win.

FSU will now prepare to host Concord University on Wednesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. Tip is once again set for 5:30 p.m.
