FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Walsh used a 13-3 run in the middle of the third quarter to grab a double-digit lead over Fairmont State and never looked back in an 88-77 non-conference victory at Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday evening.
Walsh (1-2) shot 54 percent from the field in the victory and drained 8-of-19 attempts from behind the arc. The Cavs also totaled 38 points in the paint, 15 points off turnovers and 16 second-chance points in the win.
Jalynn Graham went 10-of-13 from the field and scored a game-high 28 points for the Cavs. Walsh also got 19 points from Alex Hochstedler, 13 from Emily Westphal and 10 from Brooklyn Wooten. Brittni Clopton just missed a double-double by totaling eight points and 13 rebounds.
Makenzie White's team-high 23 points and seven rebounds were not enough to lead FSU (2-1) to victory. The Falcons also got 15 points and five assists from
Emily Puskarich, 12 from
Deidra Combs and 10 from
Amanda Ruffner. White and Puskarich each drained four three-pointers for the Falcons.
The Falcons were limited to just 41 percent from the field and were a dismal 9-of-28 from behind the arc (32.1%). The Falcons were also whistled for 29 fouls in the game, including 17 in the second half.
FSU will now prepare for its Mountain East Conference opener on Saturday evening with a trip to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Bobcats.
