Lady Falcons Edged At WV Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up a 57-55 Mountain East Conference victory over Fairmont State on Saturday evening at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon.
 
Fairmont State (2-2) held its largest lead of the game at the 7:17 mark of the fourth quarter after a three-pointer by Emily Puskarich. However, Wesleyan chipped away at the Fairmont lead throughout the quarter and gained its first lead with 1:23 remaining following a layup by Tara Goldman.
 
Makenzie White tied the game after going 1-of-2 from the free line on the next possession as the game closed in on a minute to play.
 
The game remained tied at 55-55 until Wesleyan's Mari Stewart scored on a put-back with three second remaining to give the Bobcats the 57-55 win.
 
The Falcons were led by three players in double-figures, including a team-high 13 points from Amanda Ruffner. Fairmont State also got 12 points from White and 11 points and five steals from Puskarich.
 
The Falcons shot nearly 41 percent from the field, compared to 38.5 percent from WVWC. The teams also combined for just seven three-pointers, including five from Fairmont State.
 
Wesleyan (1-1) was aided in the victory by 20 FSU turnovers, which the Bobcats turned into 27 points on the offensive end.
 
WVWC was led by 15 points from Stewart off the bench. Tara Goldman also chipped in 14 points and Wesleyan got nine points and seven rebounds from Rachel Vandertoolen.
 
FSU will return home on Monday evening for a 5:30 p.m. tip against the Pioneers of Glenville State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
