UC Rallies Past Lady Falcons, 65-55

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Charleston outscored Fairmont State 24-10 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Falcons, 65-55, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.
 
The loss drops FSU to 16-10 overall and 10-10 in the Mountain East Conference. UC improves to 10-16 overall and 8-12 in the league.
 
With FSU taking a 45-41 advantage into the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles outscored the Falcons 16-2 in the first eight minutes of the final quarter to open up their largest lead of the day, 60-47. The Falcons answer with eight of the next 10 points to cut the UC lead back to seven with just over a minute to play but it was to late as UC put the game away by knocking down 3-of-4 free-throw attempts in the final minute to pick up the 65-55 victory.
 
Katie Nunan nailed a three with just 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give FSU its largest lead of the day at 45-39, but Chyress Lockhart was fouled in the closing seconds of the quarter and went 2-of-2 from the line to trim the FSU advantage to 45-41 heading into the final quarter of play.
 
The game was tied five times and had 10 lead changes in the first three quarters, with largest lead by either team being just six points.
 
FSU had three players reach double-figures, led by Katie Nunan with 14 points. Gabrielle Etter chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and five assists and Emily Puskarich added 10 points. Deidra Combs also chipped in six points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
UC dominated the paint for most of the afternoon, holding a 34-22 rebounding edge and a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint.
 
The Golden Eagles shot over 50 percent from the field and were led by Chyress Lockhart with 24 points and four assists. Kiara Johnson recorded a double-double for UC, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
 
FSU will play its final home game of the season on Thursday evening when Glenville State comes to town for a 5:30 p.m. tip at Joe Retton Arena.
