ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Fairmont State baseball team split a doubleheader with NCAA Division I foe Georgia State, 2-1 and 5-8, on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta.
With the split, the Falcons improved to 8-3 on the season. Georgia State is now 8-6 on the season.
In game one, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Georgia State scored an unearned run on an FSU error. Maverick Keller answered for the Falcons in the top of the seventh with an RBI single into center field that scored Greg Yaksich from second.
The game remained tied at 1-1 through nine innings and went into extras before Adam Meeker singled through the left side to bring home Keller for what became the game-winning run.
The Falcons used seven pitchers in the victory, including Nick Opferman who started and pitched five and two-thirds scoreless innings. Mark McGee picked up the win on the hill for the Falcons and Michael Stout recorded his third save of the season in the win.
Georgia State scored six runs in the first two innings of game two and held-off the Falcons comeback bid late in the game to earn a split in the doubleheader.
Despite falling short in game two, Austin Norman went 3-of-4 with two runs batted-in and a run scored. Josh Wine, Alex Levitan, Fraser Brown and Phil Longnecker also had multiple-hit games for the Falcons. Levitan, Norman and Brown also each hit a double in game two.
The Falcons will now travel to Florida for three games on Monday and Tuesday. The Falcons will play Caldwell University on Monday afternoon at noon in Lantana, Fla. before traveling to St. Augustine, Fla. on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Flagler College starting at noon.
