BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State earned a split with the University of Charleston by rallying from a 4-0 deficit in game one to pick-up an 8-5 win on Friday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. The Golden Eagles responded with a 10-4 win in game two to get the split.
Game 1
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first, the Falcons scored seven runs in the bottom of the second to take control of game one early. Brooks Carr got the scoring started for FSU in the second on an RBI single that allowed Phil Longnecker to cross home plate. Scott Hessler followed up the at-bat with a RBI single into right field to bring home Nic Rush from second.
The Falcons closed the UC advantage to just one run when Josh Wine was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Adam Meeker put the Falcons in front with a single to right field that brought home two runs, putting Fairmont ahead 5-4. However, the Falcons were not done, as Jacob Witmore hammered a double into right center to cap the seven run inning for the Falcons.
After two and a half scoreless innings, Hessler added one more run for FSU in the fifth, allowing Rush to cross home plate and making the score 8-4. Charleston scored the final run of the game in the seventh to make the final score 8-5 in the opening game of the day.
Nick Opferman pitched a complete game on the hill for the Falcons, recording five strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Game 2
The Falcons struggled in multiple areas in game two, recording just four hits and scattering four runs in the 10-4 loss to the Golden Eagles.
The Falcons used five difference players on the hill and walked 10 total batters in the loss, compared to just four stikeouts. Charleston also had five stolen bases in the win.
Meeker, Fraser Brown, Longnecker and Sam Orr all recorded RBI for the Falcons in game two of the twin bill.
In addition to struggles on the hill, the Falcons also committed four errors as UC scored 10 runs on just seven hits in the game.
FSU will return to the Bridgeport Recreation Complex on Saturday afternoon for two more against West Virginia State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
