WV State Edges FSU, 6-4, 7-6

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia State edged Fairmont State, 6-4, 7-6, in a pair of Mountain East Conference battles that came down to the final inning on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

Game 1

Fairmont State (12-12, 3-5 MEC) got the scoring started in game one when Jacob Whitmore hammered a three-run home run to right field that cleared the bases and gave the Falcons a 3-0 advantage.

The score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Dylan Grimm hit an RBI single and Trayvis Patterson hit a deep single into right center to add two more runs for the Yellow Jackets, tying the game at 3-3 after five innings.

In the seventh, WV State (10-8, 5-3 MEC) added three runs to grab a three-point advantage with only three more outs remaining for FSU. The 'Jackets were aided by two FSU errors in the seventh as all three Yellow Jacket runs were unearned.

Josh Wine hit an RBI single into right center in the bottom of the seventh but a double play by WVSU during the following at-bat ended the game with State picking up the 6-4 victory.

Game 2

In game two of the doubleheader, the Falcons once again got on the board first when Austin Norman hit his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the first to give FSU a 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, Jacob Frantz hit an RBI single and then was walked home later in the inning, allowing WV State to grab an early 2-1 lead.

The momentum and lead changed once again in the top of the fourth when Nic Rush singled through the right side to bring home a pair of runs for the Falcons. Later in the inning with FSU leading 3-2, Rush scored on a wild pitch that allowed him to cross home plate from third. Fairmont State scored its fourth run of the inning on a fielder's choice by Tyler Krantz that scored Alex Levitan.

West Virginia State got one run back in the top of the fifth when Trenton Porter homered to left field to cut the FSU advantage to 5-3.

The Falcons scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth on Whitmore's sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Wine from third.

However, the Yellow Jackets scored four unanswered runs late in the game, including three in the ninth, to rally from a three-run deficit to pick up the 7-6 win.

FSU will travel to Athens next Friday for a doubleheader with the Mountain Lions of Concord starting at 1 p.m.
