Falcons Go 3-1 On Wilson, N.C. Road Trip

WILSON, N.C. -- The Fairmont State baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend in Wilson, N.C., including a win over Saint Thomas Aquinas, an East Region finalist a season ago. The Falcons also picked up a pair of wins over Clarion on Sunday afternoon.

Fairmont State 6, Saint Thomas Aquinas 3
Fairmont State jumped out to a 5-1 advantage at the end of the sixth inning after putting one run up in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jacob Whitmore started the scoring for FSU with a two-run RBI single into left field to bring home Austin Norma and Alex Levitan.

Levitan added two more for FSU in the fifth by hitting a two-run RBI single in center field to bring home Adam Meeker and Josh Wine. In the sixth, Maverick Keller chipped in the fifth run of the game for FSU with an RBI single to bring home Nic Rush.

Aquinas added two unanswered runs late in the game to pull within two runs, but Meeker have FSU some extra breathing room with an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give FSU the 6-3 win.

Addison Barber picked up the win on the hill for FSU after replacing Nick Opferman in the fourth. Michael Stout recorded a save for FSU.

Kutztown 2, Fairmont State 1
Fairmont State and Kutztown battled seven scoreless inning in a pitching duel before either offense was able to cross home plate. Austin Norman gave FSU a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the ninth inning by finally driving home Joe Wine for the first run of the game.

With a runner on third and two outs, Stout stuck out the final run of the game in the top of the ninth but the ball dropped out of the catcher's glove and an errand pass to first allow Kutztown to tie the game and put another runner on third base. KU got the winning run on a passed ball later in the inning as FSU was unable to rebound in the bottom of the ninth.

Fairmont State 12, Clarion 4 (Game 1)
In game one of a twinbill with Clarion on Sunday afternoon, the Falcons rolled to a 12-4 win, led by a 4-of-5 performance from Meeker that included a double and two RBI.

Whitmore also went 3-of-3 with two RBI and a sacrifice fly and Wine was 3-of-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Falcon bats scored three runs in the top of the first and added a six-run fourth inning to run away with the win.

Fairmont State 4, Clarion 2 (Game 2)
The Falcons started quickly in game two of the doubleheader, getting a two-run double from Levitan in the top of the first to put FSU ahead, 2-0. Rush added one more run in the first, bringing home Levitan on an RBI single.

UPJ added two runs in the third to draw within one run but that is as close as they would get as Carr added one more FSU run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Falcons the 4-2 win.

Marty Bonifant struck out four hitters in four innings of work to pick up the win on the hill. Stout recorded his second save of the weekend by pitching the final inning for FSU.
