WHEELING, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit edged Fairmont State in a pair of walk-off victories on Sunday afternoon at the JB Chambers Complex in Wheeling. In game one, WJU picked up a 2-1 win in 13 innings. Then in game two, the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up a 7-6 victory.
Game 1
Phil Longnecker put the Falcons on the board in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to bring home Jacob Whitmore to make the score 1-0. WJU answered in the fourth when Dillon Sunnafrank doubled down the third-base line to bring home Joe San Felippo for the game-tying run.
The game remained a 1-1 tie until the bottom of the 13th when Brock McGivern hit a walk-off RBI single to give the Cardinals a 2-1 win.
The opening game of the doubleheader was a pitching battle as the teams combined for just 11 hits in 13 innings.
Nick Opferman pitched 10 innings, striking out five in a no decision for the Falcons. Austin Norman pitched the final two and a third innings for the Falcons before the walk-off run scored for Wheeling.
Game 2
Alex Levitan put the Falcons up 1-0 in the second game of the day with an RBI single in the top of the first to bring home Josh Wine.
However, Wheeling scored six unanswered runs, including four in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage.
The Falcons answered by scoring five runs in the fifth to tie the game at six runs apiece. Whitmore hit an RBI single and Nic Rush drove in two more RBI on a single to right field to help the Falcons produce the five runs in the fifth. Whitmore scored the tying run of the game on a wild pitch.
Sunnafrank provided the walk-off in game two with a single to right field to bring home McGivern for the game-winning run.
