FSU, NDC Split To Open Series

AVON, Ohio -- Fairmont State and Notre Dame College split to open a four-game Mountain East Conference series at the All-Pro Freight Complex on Saturday afternoon in Avon.

Nick Opferman (4-1) struck-out five batters and pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs in the opening game of the day. The complete game is Opferman's third of the season.

Phil Longnecker opened the scoring by hitting an RBI single into right center that allowed Fraser Brown to cross home plate. After holding NDC off the scoreboard in the third, Adam Meeker drove home Dorian Hetzel on a groundout to put the Falcons ahead 2-0.

Hank Beasore's two-RBI single through the right side tied the game at 2-2 after four innings.

Meeker hit what turned out to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh when he singled down the left field line to bring home Jacob Whitemore, putting FSU in front 3-2. The game remained scoreless through the final two and a half innings, giving FSU the opening game of the series.

In the second game of the day, the Falcons struggled on the mound and at the plate in a 6-1 loss to the home standing Falcons of Notre Dame. Fairmont managed just five hits in game two and Alex Levitan provided the only FSU run of the game, a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning.

FSU and NDC will wrap-up the series with games three and four on Sunday staring at 1 p.m. back at the All-Pro Freight Complex.
