BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dropped the first two games of its Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Urbana on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
Urbana used a six-run fourth inning in game one to run away with a 10-1 victory before pulling away for an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
Austin Norman put up the only run of the game for the Falcons in first matchup of the day, hitting a sacrifice-fly to center field to bring home Josh Wine. Wine opened the game with a double to get into scoring position.
Nick Opferman (4-2) allowed just one run and one hit in the first three innings of the game, striking out five, before Urbana put up six runs in the fourth to take control of the game.
In game two, each time Urbana scored early in the game, the Falcons responded to send the game into the seventh inning with the score knotted at four runs apiece. Fraser Brown hit an RBI single and Jacob Whitmore belted a double to left center to score two more in the bottom of the first, answering Urbana's three runs in the top of the inning.
After both teams were scoreless in the second inning, Urbana added a run in the top of the third that was answered by Alex Levitan's fielder's choice that brought home Adam Meeker.
In the seventh and eighth innings, however, Urbana scored four unanswered runs to pull away and pick up a sweep of Saturday's twin bill.
The Falcons and Blue Knights will close out the series on Sunday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
