FSU, UVa-Wise Split MEC Twin Bill

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State baseball team split a conference doubleheader with UVa-Wise, 6-5, 1-7, on Sunday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

Game 1

In game one, the Falcons used a six-run second inning to grab control of the game and later held-off a seventh inning rally by the Cavs to give FSU the win in the front end of the twin bill.

Nic Rush got the scoring started for the Falcons when he hit a single to deep right center to bring in two runs for the Falcons. Two batters later, Scott Hessler doubled to right field to add two more runs for the Falcons, pushing their advantage to 4-0.

Josh Wine added the fifth run of the inning for FSU on a fielder's choice that brought home Hessler. Austin Norman wrapped up the scoring for FSU when he tripled to right center, allowing Wine to reach home plate.

UVa-Wise scored the first two runs of the game and added three in the seventh inning before Ryan French got the final out of the game for the Falcons to get the save.

Logan Johnson (3-2) recorded six strikeouts and pitched six and two-thirds innings to pick up the win on the hill for the Falcons.

Game 2

After UVa-Wise put the first run of game two on the board in the second inning, Alex Levitan brought home the only run of the game for the Falcons on a double into center field to plate Jacob Whitmore, tying the game at a run apiece.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when the Falcons gave up six runs, including one on a wild pitch and three being walked in.

Despite the loss, Michael Stout pitched eight quality innings for the Falcons, striking out 12 batters and allowing just two runs. The Cavs had just three hits in the first eight innings of the game.

With the split, the Falcons are now 13-15 on the season and 4-8 in Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons will now prepare for a nine-inning game against the University of Charleston on Wednesday evening at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
