Falcons Record Back-to-Back Walk-off Wins

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State picked up a pair of walk-off victories on Monday afternoon, taking three of the four games in its Mountain East Conference series with West Liberty.

Phil Longnecker drove a ball into right field in the seventh inning of game one to bring home Maverick Keller, giving the Falcons a 3-2 victory. After West Liberty scored five unanswered runs late in game two to take a one-run lead, Austin Norman blasted a single to deep right field to bring home Josh Wine and Ted Sova for the win.

The Falcons are now 20-26 overall and 10-18 in the MEC with just four more regular season games remaining against the MEC North leading Shepherd Rams. FSU strained West Liberty's MEC Tournament hopes with the sweep, knocking the Hilltoppers (24-22, 12-16 MEC) two games out of the final playoff spot with just one weekend left in the regular season.

Game 1

West Liberty jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one, before being held to just one hit in the final six innings of the game by Fairmont State pitchers Zac Burch and Tyler Holt. Holt improved to 2-2 on the season after being credited with the win.

The Falcons tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, when Wine stole home on a double steal and Alex Levitan doubles to left field to bring home Norman from second.

With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Wine singled to center field to move Keller over to third with just one out. Longnecker ended the game during the next at-bat, driving a single to right field to plate Keller.

Game 2

In game two, the Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI singles by Jacob Whitmore and Adam Meeker that each drove home a pair of runs. The score remained 4-0 until West Liberty scored three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to grab the 5-4 advantage with just three outs remaining for the Falcons.

After a leadoff single by Nic Rush and a single by Wine to move Sova (pitch-runner for Rush) over to third, Wine was able to also moved into scoring position on a wild pitch to put the game-winning base runner on second for FSU. However, after WLU got the second out of the inning on a groundout, the Falcons were down to their final out of the game.

Norman was the next to hit for FSU, hitting a rocket into right field to score both runners, giving the Falcons their second walk-off victory of the day.

The Falcons will travel to Shepherd on Friday afternoon for a twin bill with the Rams starting at 1 p.m. FSU will honor its eight seniors next Sunday when Shepherd visits the Bridgeport Recreation Complex for senior day. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
