Rams Edge Falcons On Senior Day

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Shepherd edged Fairmont State, 5-3, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon during the senior day doubleheader at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

The Falcons (20-28, 10-20) led both games entering the seventh inning before the Rams capitalized down the stretch to wrap up the Mountain East Conference's northern division with a 32-12 overall record and a 23-7 mark in MEC action.

In the first game of the day with Shepherd holding an early 2-0 advantage, the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the six to take the lead. Austin Norman put FSU on the board by hitting a single up the middle to allow Josh Wine to reach home. Two batters later, Alex Levitan drilled a double into deep right center to score two more for the Falcons.

However, a three-run inning by Shepherd in the top of the seventh put the Rams back in front for good, giving the Rams a 5-3 win.

In the nightcap, the Rams once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Falcons again put together a strong inning at the plate, scoring four runs to take a 4-3 advantage.

Norman once again got the scoring started for FSU with a single into left field to score Dorian Hetzel from third. Later in the inning during Levitan's at-bat, Phil Longnecker scored following a throwing error by the SU second baseman. Jacob Whitmore added an RBI single and Nic Rush blasted an RBI double to also drive in runs for the Falcons during the inning.

After Shepherd tied the game in the seventh, a tenth inning was needed to break the tie. In the tenth, Shepherd strung together five runs to more than double its runs scored in the first nine innings of play. Levitan scored in the bottom of the 10th on a double steal but the Falcons still came up on the short end of a 9-5 final score.

FSU will close out the 2016 season on Monday afternoon when they travel to Shepherdstown to wrap up the series with the Rams.
