BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State senior wide receiver
Fabian Guerra was named Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his three-touchdown performance against Concord on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
West Virginia State's Kyle Alexander (defensive) and Shepherd's Ruan Venter (special teams) were also honored for their play during the second week of the season.
Guerra, a senior from Miami, Fla., is the Offensive Player of the Week after helping Fairmont State to a 2-0 start to the season with a win over Concord. Guerra had 11 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Guerra hauled in touchdown receptions of nine, 24 and 37 yards in the opening half of the game and is currently second in the MEC in receiving yards per game (104.0) and tied for fourth in receptions per game (7.0). Guerra moved into third all-time at Fairmont State for career receptions (171) and fourth for receiving yards (2,164) following Saturday's performance.
Alexander, a freshman from Chester, Va., is the Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in helping West Virginia State pick up a 37-24 win over Urbana. Alexander had two interceptions on the day, the first he returned 46 yards for WVSU's second score of the day. The second came late in the fourth quarter as he picked off a pass in the end zone preventing the Blue Knights from getting to within a single possession and securing the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Venter, a sophomore from Morgantown, W.Va., is the Special Teams Player of the Week for his part in Shepherd's 38-22 win over Charleston. Venter helped the Rams control field position against the Golden Eagles punting four times for an average of 47.8 yards with a long of 64. He also had three downed inside the 20-yard line, including one in the fourth quarter that was downed at the one-yard line and ended up leading to a game-clinching safety for Shepherd.

Offense: Dante Roberts (GSC) once again turned in a solid performance completing 33-of-45 passes for 296 yards with two touchdowns passing and another on the ground ... Mitchell Shegos (NDC) had seven catches for 162 yards and became the program's all-time leader in TD receptions ... Jeff Ziemba (SU) was 15-of-26 for 219 through the air with three touchdowns and also had 56 yards on 12 carries ... Michael Anderson (WVWC) had 157 yards on just 19 carries with one touchdown ... Juwan Etheredge (WVSU) rushed for 132 yards on 29 carries with a pair of TDs ... Cale Burdyshaw (UU) accounted for three touchdowns with two passing and one rushing ... he also threw for 185 yards.
Defense: Vincent Ellis (NDC) had six tackles, including one resulting in a safety and a sack on UVa-Wise's final drive that helped the Falcons preserve the victory ...
Trevon Shorts (FSU) had an interception he returned 68 yards for a touchdown as the Falcons blanked Concord ... James Gupton (SU) had 11 tackles against Charleston, including three for a loss ... Marcus Umu (GSC) forced a fumble on West Virginia Wesleyan's final drive to help the Pioneers hang on for the win ... Tavaris Anderson (WVWC) had 10 tackles and recovered a fumble ... Kevin Pierre (CU) had eight tackles, including 2.5 for a loss with two sacks ... Andre Cliff (UU) had four tackles and forced and recovered a fumble for the Blue Knights.
Special Teams: Nate Simmons (WVWC) scooped up a blocked punt and returned for a TD ... Kyle Kaplan (NDC) had a pair of field goals in the second half that proved to be the difference in a win over UVa-Wise ... Garrett Lee (CU) averaged 44.2 yards on five punts against Fairmont State ... Ross Snodgrass (UU) had a 34-yard field goal was 3-for-3 on PATs ... also had two touchbacks.
