NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Fairmont State dropped a pair of hard fought matches on Saturday to wrap up play at the 2016 Walsh Volleyball Classic. The Falcons opened the day by falling to Bellarmine in a five-setter (25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11). In the second match of the day, FSU dropped a four-set decision to the hosts (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 27-25).
Against Bellarmine, FSU was led by
Mackenzie Harrison with 17 kills and six digs.
Breanna Blot also reached double figures with 11 kills and five total blocks. Despite the loss, FSU held a 14-9 advantage in blocks, including nine from
Kayla Smith and seven from
Alyssa Kelly.
Megan Clerico led the Falcons defensively with 29 digs.
FSU also had two players with double-digit assists, including
Jessica Furda with 22 and
Alexa Gore with 13.
In the evening against Walsh, the Falcons were once again led by Harrison and Blot with 16 and 12 kills, repectively. Smith once against had a big match around the net, totaling five block assists against the Cavaliers. Furda recorded a team-high 36 assists.
The Falcons had two players with double-digit digs against Walsh, including 17 from Clerico and 13 from
Julia Shemaitis.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday evening when they travel to the MEC/PSAC Crossover event at Mercyhurst University. FSU will open play at 5 p.m. against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday. FSU will then face Gannon and Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at Gannon University.
