URBANA, Ohio – Fairmont State outscored Urbana 29-8 in the second quarter and never looked back, picking up a 19-point victory (88-69) over the Blue Knights on Monday afternoon inside the Grimes Center.
In the victory, FSU senior
Makenzie White recorded her second-career triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. White went 9-of-15 from the field and also added four steals in the victory.
White is just the second player in Mountain East Conference history to record a triple-double (Asia Greenleaf, WVSU – 2013-14). She is also just the seventh player in NCAA Division II with a triple-double this season.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in league play. UU falls to 4-9 overall and 2-8 in MEC play.
The Falcons had five players reach double-figures as
Emily Puskarich (19),
Gabrielle Etter (15),
Amanda Ruffner (13) and
Deidra Combs (12) joined White in double-digit scoring.
The Falcons shot 47.2 percent from the field (34-of-72) and scored 44 points in the paint and 30 points off-turnovers in the win. FSU also drained nine three-pointers on the afternoon.
After a tight opening quarter that ended with FSU holding a slim 19-15 advantage, the Falcons exploded to a 48-23 halftime advantage in the second quarter.
The Falcons limited Urbana to just 32 percent from the field in the opening half, forcing 15 Blue Knight turnovers. Urbana ended the day with 25 turnovers, compared to just 12 for FSU in the win.
After struggling from the field in the first 20 minutes of action, Urbana went 17-of-28 in the second half (61%). Despite their improvement from the field on the offensive end in the second half, Urbana was unable to close the gap as the Falcons continued to roll to the 19-point victory.
FSU will wrap up its three-game road trip on Thursday evening at Shepherd. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
