SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd used a 20-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter to knock-off Fairmont State, 64-54, on Thursday evening at the Butcher Center in Shepherdstown.
The loss drops Fairmont's record to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in Mountain East Conference play. Shepherd improves to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in the league. The Falcons are now a dismal 2-6 on the road this season.
The Rams shot a boiling 58 percent from the field and held a 38-26 advantage on the glass to take down the Falcons. FSU on the other hand, converted on just 20-of-55 field goal attempts (36.4%). Both teams struggled from behind the arc, making just eight three-pointers combined, on the evening (FSU 5-SU 3).
The Falcons had three players reach double-figures, led by
Deidra Combs with 17 points and six rebounds. The Falcons also got 14 points and six rebounds from
Amanda Ruffner and
Gabrielle Etter chipped in 11 points.
Shepherd turned the ball over 27 times and shot a dismal 11-of-22 from the free throw line in the win.
The Rams got a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds from Liz Myers. Kayla Tibbs also chipped in 15 points. Cara Mason helped guide the Ram offense with nine assists in the win.
FSU will return home on Saturday afternoon to battle West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
