FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State used a 12-0 run late in the first quarter and then outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 21-7 in the second quarter to take down the Bobcats (85-63) on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.
In the victory, senior forward
Amanda Ruffner became the 27
th Fairmont State women's basketball player to go over 1,000 career points, ending her day with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists.
A total of four starters reached double-figures for the Falcons (10-8, 7-5 MEC), as Ruffner was joined by
Deidra Combs (20),
Makenzie White (16) and
Emily Puskarich (15). White just missed a double-double by also pulling down nine rebounds.
The Falcons finished the afternoon shooting 44 percent from the field (28-of-64), dominating the paint with a 46-12 scoring margin and outrebound the Bobcats 40-32. FSU also scored 28 points off 24 Wesleyan turnovers and scored 12 points on the fast break in the victory.
The Bobcats shot better from behind the arc (10-of-17, 58.8%) then from inside the arc (23-of-56, 41.1%), scoring just 12 points in the paint.
The Falcons led by as many as 27 at the 3:14 mark of the fourth quarter before Wesleyan closed the final gap to 22 points.
Wesleyan (6-9, 6-6 MEC) got a team-high 21 points from Rachel Vandertoolen as the lone Bobcat in double-figures.
Despite the large margin of victory, the opening quarter featured six lead changes and three ties in the first seven minutes of action.
The Falcons will remain at home for a 5:30 p.m. tip against Concord on Thursday evening inside Joe Retton Arena.
