Falcons Improve To 13-0 With 95-78 Win Over UC

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – For the second-straight game, second-ranked Fairmont State rolled down the stretch to pull away with a 95-78 Mountain East Conference victory over the University of Charleston on Sunday evening at Joe Retton Arena.

In the win, Thomas Wimbush was nearly unstoppable with 30 points, going 10-of-11 from the field and 5-of-5 from behind the arc.

The win helps FSU improve to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the Mountain East Conference. UC suffers its third-straight loss and is now 9-4 overall and 3-4 in the league.

With UC pulling to within eight (54-46) with 15:12 remaining in the game, the Falcons went on a game-changing 10-0 run over the next 56 seconds to grab an 18-point advantage (64-46), its largest of the day. That run was enough to fend off any comeback bid by the Golden Eagles as FSU led by double-figures the rest of the evening.

Despite missing its season average by two points in the victory, FSU once again showed why they are one of the most potent offensive teams in NCAA Division II, shooting 52.5 percent from the field (32-of-61) and 50 percent from three, including 11 makes from behind the arc. The Falcons also went 20-of-22 from the free throw line.

In addition to Wimbush's performance, the Falcons got 14 points and seven rebounds from Matt Bingaya, 14 points and eight assists from Shammgod Wells and 10 points from D'Ondre Stockman. Wimbush and Bingaya each missed just one field-goal apiece in the win.

The Falcons shared the ball well on offense; recording 19 assists on 32 made baskets.

The University of Charleston also shot over 50 percent from the floor in the losing effort, getting a team-high 19 points from Jonathan Tshibuy and 18 from LeJavius Johnson. Justin Coleman also recorded a double-double for UC, scoring 12 points and pulling-down 12 rebounds.

UC made just 4-of-13 three-pointers and were forced into 19 turnovers in the loss.

Fairmont State will remain at home for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with West Virginia State on Tuesday evening inside Joe Retton Arena.
