FSU Prepares For "2017 Battle For The Bit" In Glenville

Complete Game Notes : Fairmont State | Glenville State

The Matchup

- Fairmont State will look to get back on track this Saturday when it visits Glenville State for a 1 p.m. Mountain East Conference battle at Morris Stadium in Glenville. The Falcons have won three-straight games against the Pioneers.
- FSU has won its last three meetings with Glenville State, but all three have been very close games. The Falcons won 40-36 at Duvall-Rosier Field in 2014, 28-24 in Glenville in 2015 and 37-30 at home last fall. Prior to that, the Pioneers had won four straight in the series which FSU leads 48-41-3.
- Despite forcing a season-high four turnovers by the Shepherd Rams last Thursday and holding them 22 points and 137 yards below their season averages, FSU still found itself on the short end of a 28-23 score when the final horn sounded.
- Two of the four Ram turnovers led directly to 13 points for the Falcons.
- The loss, which was the second in a row for Fairmont State, dropped the Falcons to 4-3 overall and to 4-2 in the MEC. It's only the second time since the start of the 2015 season that FSU has suffered back-to-back losses in the same season.
- Since starting the season 0-3, Glenville State has bounced back and won three of its last four games, including a 17-13 victory over West Liberty on the road last Saturday. The Pioneers are 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the MEC.
- For the third-straight week, FSU will face a dangerous offense. The Pioneers are fourth in the MEC in total offense (414.4) and scoring (30.4), third in passing (252.9) and fifth in rushing (161.6).
- In its three losses this season, Fairmont State has lost by a combined 14 points (East Stourdsburg-4, Notre Dame-5, Shepherd-5).

Scouting the Offense
- Fairmont State sophomore receiver Laurence King is tied for fifth in the Mountain East Conference and tied for 28th in NCAA Division II in touchdown receptions this fall with six.
- King, last season's MEC Offensive Freshman of the Year when he caught a single-season school record 88 passes for 973 yards and seven touchdowns, has just 21 catches this fall for 305 yards and six scores.
- For his career King has 109 receptions for 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns. He need just nine more receptions and two more TD catches to break into the Top 10 in school history in both categories.
- Senior receiver Brandon Boyd caught a team-high four passes for 79 yards in the loss to Shepherd last Thursday which allowed him to surpass the 1,000-yard receiving mark for his career. Boyd, who is in his third season of playing for Fairmont State after transferring from L.A. Harbor Community College, now has 86 career catches for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns at FSU.
- In addition, sophomore Shawn Harris caught his first collegiate touchdown pass in the loss to Shepherd. Harris snagged a seven-yard scoring pass from JuJuan Young-Battle in the opening quarter to give FSU an early 7-0 lead. For the season Harris is fourth on the team in receiving with 17 catches for 231 yards and one TD.
- FSU has five receivers with double-digit receptions and at least 160 receiving yards this season.

- Terrell Charles is leading the FSU ground attack with 83 carries for 360 yards and two touchdowns on the year.
- As a team, FSU is averaging just 2.9 yards per carry.
- Fairmont's offense came into last week's game pretty proficient in the red zone. Prior to Thursday the Falcons were 18-of-22 (82 percent) on red zone scoring chances. Now the team is 20-of-27 (74 percent) and ranked 108th in the nation in that statistical category.
- FSU senior kicker Sam Keil leads the Mountain East Conference with nine made field goals, but is last in the conference in PAT percentage. Keil, who has kicked a pair of game-winning field goals for the Falcons this fall, is 9-of-13 on field goal attempts, including a career-long 45-yarder which gave Fairmont a win over Urbana.
- In two seasons Keil has made 18 field goals which ties him with Frank Keenan (2010-11) for fifth-place all-time in school history. Johnny Dearstine (2012-15) holds the school record for career made field goals with 28.

- FSU has five different players with multiple interceptions this season, led by Jerry Iweh and Michael Porter with three apiece. Stephen Turner, Antonio Harris, Naiquan Thomas and Demonne Cox each have two interceptions on the year. Both of Thomas's interceptions have been returned for touchdowns this season, including a 37-yard pick six against Shepherd last Thursday. Iweh and Turner also have interception returns for TDs this season.
- Fairmont's 14 interceptions on the year ranks second in the country.
- Starting middle linebacker Marcus Porter is leading FSU in tackles for the four-straight year with 62 tackles, including 11.0 for losses this season. Porter also had 2.5 sacks and has recovered a fumble this season.
