URBANA, Ohio – After falling behind by a 2-1 margin after the third set, Fairmont State took sets four and five to win a thrilling five-setter in Mountain East Conference action on Friday evening.
With the win, Fairmont State picks up its 10
th win of the year, improving to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the league. Urbana's record slips to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the league.
After committing 12 errors in the second and third sets (both won by Urbana), the Falcons cleaned up their mistakes in the final two sets, committed just six errors in the fourth and fifth sets.
Fairmont State was led by senior
Mackenzie Harrison with 26 kills and 18 digs, both team highs in the victory. FSU also finished the match with a 9-5 advantage in blocks, getting a team-high seven blocks from
Morgan Poling.
Julia Shemaitis also recorded a double-double for the Falcons with 10 kills and 10 digs in the victory.
Taylor Wisniewski and
Emma Mobley also chipped into Fairmont's offensive attack with six and five kills, respectively.
Alexa Gore paced the FSU offense with 41 assists and 16 digs from her setter position. Junior libero
Megan Clerico chipped in 17 digs defensively for the Falcons.
Urbana's Katlynn Dunlap recorded 20 kills and 27 digs to pace the Blue Knights in the five-set loss.
Fairmont State will now head north to face Notre Dame College on Saturday at 6 p.m. in South Euclid.
