INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State shot 52 percent from the field and had just 10 turnovers in a 106-100 upset victory over Fairmont State on Monday night at the Walker Convocation Center.
The Yellow Jackets had a dominating 62-42 scoring advantage in the paint, and scored 22 points at the free throw line in the victory. West Virginia State also scored 19 points off 18 Fairmont State turnovers and held a 26-10 advantage in transition scoring.
Despite the loss, Fairmont State held a 49-39 advantage on the glass - including 24 offensive rebounds. However, Fairmont State only held a one-point advantage in second-chance points (22-21). The Falcons also held a 14-6 advantage in three-point field goals.
Fairmont State (3-2, 1-1 MEC) got a game- and career-high 40 points from
Jason Jolly in the loss. Jolly hit a career-best nine threes on the night and also had six assists.
Vonte Montgomery had 19 points and eight rebounds and
D'Ondre Stockman chipped in 14. FSU struggled from the free throw line making just 16-of-27 attempts.
Pat Johnson-Agwu came off the bench and scored 26 points while pulling down six rebounds in the win for the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 2-0 MEC). The Yellow Jackets also got 21 points and eight rebounds from Jeremiah Moore, 18 points and five assists from Ernest Jenkins and 15 points and a team-high six assists from Langston Cooke.
The Falcons will now take a short break to spend Thanksgiving with their families, prior to returning to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Glenville State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waco Center.
