Strong Second Half Leads FSU Past Salem

Kotchman scored a team-high 26 points, including eight 3-pointers

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State outscored Salem 51-18 in the second half, pulling away for a lopsided 87-42 non-conference victory over the Tigers on Wednesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. Fairmont State scored 34 points off 32 forced turnovers on the evening.
 
With the win, FSU improves to 5-5 on the season, winning two of its last three outings. Salem slips to 3-8 on the year.
 
Every active player on the Fairmont State roster scored in Wednesday's contest, including a team-high 26 points from Sierra Kotchman. Kotchman shot 9-of-14 from the field with eight three-pointers on the evening. Hope Bray came off the bench and chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, and Brooke Kurucz added 10 points and five assists to give the Falcons three double-digit scorers on the evening.
 
Fairmont State shot 50 percent from the field, including 12-of-29 from behind the arc (41.4%). The Falcons were also 17-of-19 from the free throw line and passed out 17 assists 29 made baskets.
 
Salem was led by Keishla Gilmore with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort. Jillian Romero also reached double-figures for Salem with 15 points and four steals.
 
Salem was limed to just four points in the fourth quarter of play and shot just 27.5 percent from the field (14-of-51), including a dismal 4-of-20 performance from three (20%). The Tigers recorded 0 bench points in the loss.
 
FSU will now prepare for another non-conference matchup next Tuesday when Edinboro comes to town for a 2 p.m. tip at Joe Retton Arena.
