INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Second-ranked Fairmont State put on a clinic in the second half of Thursday's 108-72 victory over West Virginia State at the Walker Convocation Center.
After finishing the first half on a 17-6 run to take a 17-point lead into the half (50-33), the Falcons shot 59 percent in the second half and made nine three-pointers to put on a dominating performance during the final 20 minutes of the game against the Yellow Jackets.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 24-1 overall and 18-1 in the Mountain East Conference. WVSU slips to 6-19 overall and 3-16 in the league.
Six players reached double-figures for the Falcons, led by
Jason Jolly with 17 points. The Falcons also got 15 points apiece from
Matt Bingaya and
Ty Dobson and
Andrew Emrick,
D'Ondre Stockman and
Troy Cantrell each added 10. Emrick and Cantrell each added 10 rebounds to record double-doubles for the Falcons.
Shammgod Wells recorded eight assists in the win, and now needs just seven more assists to become the all-time school leader.
For the game, FSU shot 52.6 percent from the field and outrebounded West Virginia State by a 43-39 margin. The Falcons also forced 26 turnovers and scored 34 points on the opposite end, 19 of which came in transition.
West Virginia State (6-19, 3-16 MEC) got 15 points from Tyrie Elliott, 12 from Ernest Jenkins and 10 from Terrance Jenkins. The Yellow Jackets were held to just 39 percent from the field.
FSU will now prepare for a showdown with the University of Charleston on Saturday at 4 p.m.
