CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Second-ranked Fairmont State held off a late surge by the University of Charleston to pick up a 92-86 road win on Saturday afternoon, improving to 25-1 on the season (19-1 MEC).
Charleston falls to 14-12 overall and 8-12 in Mountain East Conference play.
Fairmont, who led for the entire second half, capitalized down the stretch to close out the Golden Eagles, in front of a large crowd at the newly-opened Wehrle Athletic Arena.
Trailing by nine (81-72) at the 5:21 mark, Charleston went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to cut the Fairmont lead to just three, following a three by Justin Coleman. However, Fairmont went 7-of-10 from the free throw line and got a huge layup from
Jason Jolly in the closing minutes to wrap up the critical road win.
UC made just two of its final seven field goal attempts, including going 0-of-3 from behind the arc in the final three minutes of the game.
The Falcons shot 46.2 percent from the field (30-of-65) and drained 11 three-pointers in the victory. Fairmont State also knocked-down 21-of-24 free throw attempts in the win.
UC shot over 50 percent from the field (30-of-58) and held a 42-28 scoring advantage in the paint. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded FSU 29-24.
Matt Bingaya went 8-of-14 from the field with 21 points in the victory. The Falcons also got 18 points, five rebounds and three steals from
Thomas Wimbush, 17 from
Vonte Montgomery, 14 from
D'Ondre Stockman and 12 from Jolly.
Elliott Cole scored a game-high 29 points for Charleston in the loss. Coleman (15) and Jaylen Hinton (10) also reached double-figures.
FSU will wrap up its regular season road schedule on Thursday evening with a trip to Glenville State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
Note: No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State (24-1), the last remaining undefeated team in NCAA Division II, was defeated 88-71 at Missouri Southern on Saturday evening. A new edition of both national polls will be released on Tuesday afternoon.
