Combs Goes Over 1,000 Career Points As FSU Edges UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Deidra Combs became the fourth player this season and the 30th in Fairmont State women's basketball history to go over 1,000 career points, helping the Falcons hold off the University of Charleston, 67-65, on Saturday afternoon inside the newly-opened Wehrle Athletic Arena.

Combs finished strong at the rim with 32 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Falcons the lead for good (63-61). On the next UC possession, an offensive foul was called on the Golden Eagles to allow FSU to regain possession with just 16 seconds remaining.

After Gabrielle Etter hit both free throws to put the Falcons up by four following a quick foul by UC, the 'Eagles missed a three on the offensive end and were once against forced to foul.

After Makenzie White knocked down 1-of-2 at the line to put the Falcons ahead 66-61, Jordyn Peck and Abby Watson scored on back-to-back possession to trim the FSU lead to just a single point (66-65). UC forced a Fairmont turnover between Peck and Watson's field goals to cut into Fairmont's five-point advantage.

With just three seconds remaining, Amanda Ruffner was fouled and hit only the front-end of the two shots, making Fairmont's lead a two-point advantage. However, Watson was forced to heave a long-range three that fell short, wrapping up the 67-65 win for the Falcons.

Combs, needing 19 points to pass the 1,000 point mark this afternoon, netted 22 points on 9-of-14 from the field and also forced four steals in the victory. The Falcons also got 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals from White, and Ruffner chipped in 12 points in the victory.

Statistically the game was evenly matched, as UC held a one percent shooting advantage (44.4%-43.4%) and outrebounded the Falcons by just three (28-25).

Peck led UC in the victory with 26 points on 10-of-15 from the field. Mya Walker also reached double-figures with 12.
