CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Fairmont State's quest for a Mountain East Conference Championship fell short on Sunday afternoon, as Wheeling Jesuit punched its ticket to the NCAA Atlantic Regional with an 80-61 win over the Falcons.
With the loss, Fairmont State wraps up the season with a 19-12 overall record. The Falcons will also say goodbye to a six member senior class that featured four 1,000-point scorers.
The Cardinals shot over 50 percent from the field and recorded 23 assists on 26 made baskets to run away with the victory. WJU went 9-of-16 from behind the arc (56.3%).
Five players reached double figures for the Cardinals, led by Kylie Frizell with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists. Frizell drained 4-of-5 three-point attempts. Mariah Callen also filled the stat sheet for the Cardinals with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists. Monica Burns (17), Jaana Motton (13) and Lydia Hyburg (12) rounded out five players in double figures for the Cardinals.
Fairmont State, who struggled from the from the field at just 39 percent, got a team-high 12 points from
Amanda Ruffner.
Gabrielle Etter and
Deidra Combs also reached double-figures with 10 points apiece.
Emily Puskarich added two more three-pointers to her 2017 tournament total to set a new MEC record with 12 in this year's tournament.

Makenzie White were each named to the MEC All-Tournament team after leading the Falcons to the MEC finals for the first time in program history. White also received the Commissioner's Heart & Hustle Award.
