Falcons Sweep First Conference Series Since 2011

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State completed the sweep of Wheeling Jesuit on Monday afternoon with a pair of Mountain East Conference Northern Division victories over the Cardinals.
 
With the wins, FSU improves to 18-15 overall and 10-6 in Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons are now just three wins away from matching last season's win total and have 18 games remaining in the 2017 season.
 
Wheeling Jesuit continues to struggle with a 2-24 overall record, and 1-15 mark in league play.
 
The series sweep is also the first since 2011 for the Falcons. Fairmont's last series sweep was a home series against West Liberty back from April 15-17, 2011.
 
Game 1
 
The Falcons opened the day with a 7-4 victory in the early game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and adding three more on a three-run home run by Jacob Whitmore in the fourth inning to push Fairmont's lead out to a commanding 7-2 margin.
 
In addition to Whitmore's homer in the fourth, the senior also belted an RBI triple to left field in the first inning to start the scoring for Fairmont State. Austin Norman followed up Whitmore's triple with a home run to right field to push Fairmont's lead to 3-1. Brooks Carr also drove in a run in the first inning on a single into right field.
 
Luke Paull made the start for Fairmont State and improved to 3-2 on the year after striking out four batters in five innings of work. Mark McKee and Houston Morris (S, 1) also pitched one inning apiece for the Falcons.
 
Game 2
 
In the second game of the day, the Falcons plated 17 runs and recorded 17 hits in a blowout win over the Cardinals to wrap up the series. In the win, FSU scored 10 runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away after trailing by a 2-0 margin entering the fourth inning.
 
The Falcons had six players record multiple hits in the win, including three apiece from Greg Yaksich and Whitmore.
 
Myers and Norman each hit home runs in the fourth inning, giving Norman two on the day. Darrin Zombro and Tyler Krantz also doubled for the Falcons in the late afternoon game.
 
Zach Uhazie (1-1) picked up his first win of the season on the hill for the Falcons, striking out eight batters in seven inning of work. Both of Wheeling's runs in game two were unearned.
