FSU Splits MEC Twin Bill at UVa-Wise

WISE, Va. -- Fairmont State earned a split with the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 12-6, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at Stallard Field in Wise.

With the split, FSU moves to 14-15 overall and 6-6 in the league. UVa-Wise is now 12-17 overall and 6-6 in Mountain East Conference action.

The Falcons totaled 12 runs on 16 hits to roll to a 12-6 victory in game one of the doubleheader - FSU scored eight runs in the first two innings of the win. The Falcons also held a 6-5 lead in the middle of the fifth inning of game two before the Cavs tallied three of the final four runs of the game to pick up the 8-7 win and earn the doubleheader split.

Game 1

Ben Myers accounted for both of Fairmont's runs in the first inning of game one, starting with a double to left field that allowed Austin Norman to cross home plate and begin the scoring. Later in the inning, Myers stole home to put FSU in front 2-0.

After a four run bottom of the first for UVa-Wise, the Falcons looked to take control of the game with a six-run second inning. Darrin Zombro and Austin Norman started the assault for FSU with back-to-back RBI singles in the frame. FSU jumped in front 5-4 when Jacob Whitmore was walked home during the next FSU at-bat.

Johnny Kesling also chipped in an RBI single and Greg Yaksich drove in a pair of runs late in the second inning to deep right field, making the score 8-4 in favor of FSU.

UVa-Wise's David Thomas and Fairmont's Yaksich traded home runs in the bottom of the third and top of the four to make the score 9-5 after four innings of play.

The Cavs scored one more run in the sixth on a wild pitch, but FSU put up three more runs in the top of the seventh to double UVa-Wise's point total in the win.

Norman and Kesling both recorded three hits in the opening game of the doubleheader and Yaksich drove home a team-high three RBIs in the win. FSU had five extra-base hits in game one.

Michael Stout improved to 4-3 on the season after striking out five batters in five and two-thirds innings of work. Tyler Holt recorded his second save of the year, striking out two of the final four outs in the game.

Game 2

Norman continued his strong performance at the plate in game two, hitting two home runs and doubling for the second time on the afternoon. Norman drove in four runs and scored three times in the late game.

After UVa-Wise opened a 5-0 lead after two inning in game two, Norman hit his first of two home runs in the top of the fourth to get FSU on the scoreboard.

In the top of the fifth, Whitmore cut the deficit to just two runs (5-3) following a two-RBI single to bring home Brooks Carr and Troy Kifer. Two batters late, Norman homered again, this time driving home three runs to give FSU a 6-5 advantage at the midway point of the game.
