BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State received a pair of clutch pitching performances on Sunday afternoon to earn a pair of 2-0 shutout victories over Wheeling Jesuit at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
In game one,
Michael Stout improved to 5-3 on the season after giving up just three hits and striking out six against the Cardinals.
The brilliant pitching continued in game two, as
Matt Maiers improved to 3-2 on the year with a nine-inning shutout of the Cardinals, striking-out seven batters and allowing just six hits.
Wheeling Jesuit did not record an extra-base hit on the afternoon.
The only offense during game one came in the bottom of the second inning when
Greg Yaksich hit a two-run home run to right center. The Falcons totaled six hits in the opening game of the day, including Yaksich's home run and a double by
Tyler Hill.
Troy Kifer broke a tie game in the bottom of the third inning of game two when he reached home on a double steal with
Jacob Whitmore, giving FSU a 1-0 advantage.
Kifer also provided the second run of the game for FSU, hitting an RBI single into right center to bring home
Scott Hessler from third in the bottom of the fifth. Hessler led off the inning with a triple to left center to put himself in scoring position.
FSU (16-15, 8-6 MEC) will host Wheeling Jesuit in games three and four of the MEC North series on Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
