FSU Softball Splits at WJU

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Fairmont State softball held off a late push by Wheeling Jesuit in game one of Monday's doubleheader to earn a split with the Cardinals at the I-470 complex.

Following the split, FSU goes to 16-26 overall and 9-15 in the league. WJU is now 17-23 overall and 11-15 in MEC games.

In game one, Addie Fullen got the Falcons on the board in the top of the first with a single up the middle that brought home Whitley Mongan. Later in the inning during Abby Burgess' at-bat, Fullen and Samantha Hoban both scored unearned runs thanks to a throwing error by the WJU first baseman, putting the Falcons in front 3-0.

Still in the first inning, Jenny Stubbs made the score 4-0 on an RBI infield single that allowed Beth Cook to cross home plate for another FSU run.

After Wheeling got a run back in the bottom of the first, Stubbs delivered again for the Falcons in the third inning with a single to center field that brought home Cook, pushing Fairmont's advantage to 5-1.

After WJU cut Fairmont's advantage to 5-3 in the bottom of the third, Burgess delivered what became the game-winning run in the top of the fifth on an infield groundout that brought home Hoban.

Wheeling Jesuit scored a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings, but it was to late as the Falcons closed out the 6-5 win by getting the final three outs in the seventh.

Despite another quick start in game two of the day, the Cardinals totaled seven runs in the final two innings of the game to earn a split. FSU scored four runs in the top of the first and led 6-2 in the middle of the fourth inning before WJU rallied for the win.

Abbi Fetty led the Falcons at the plate in game two, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Jordan Lewis also went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and run scored.

The Falcons did do some damage on the base paths on Monday afternoon, finishing the day with six stolen bases as a team. Four different FSU players stole a base on the afternoon, including Carly Clarke, Lewis, Hoban and Stubbs. Clarke and Lewis both stole a pair of bases.

The Falcons will now prepare for a four-game series with Shepherd on Wednesday and Thursday in Shepherdstown. The first pitch of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
