SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Fairmont State and Shepherd split a pair of 2-1 Mountain East Conference Northern Division finals on Wednesday afternoon in Shepherdstown.
Â
Fairmont State's
Beth Cook was the first to strike on Wednesday by hitting a solo home run to left field in the top of the second to give the Falcons an early lead.
Â
However, FSU was held off the board the rest of the game as Shepherd got an RBI single from Paige Buckworth in the fourth and another from Molly Stanley in the eighth to give the Rams a leg up in the series.
Â
Cook also doubled in game one for the Falcons, providing both extra-base hits in the game.
Â
The teams traded roles in game two, as the Rams struck first in the bottom of the first when Alexandra Witt singled through the left side to put Shepherd out in front by a 1-0 score.
Â
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when
Abbi Fetty tied the game at a run apiece following a single that plated
Jenny Stubbs. Later in the inning, Shepherd walked in the game-winning run during
Samantha Hoban's at-bat, allowing
Jordan Lewis to touch home for Fairmont's 2-1 advantage.
Â
Hannah Absalom pitched a gem in game two, allowing just one run on four scattered hits in the complete-game victory. Absalom is now 8-12 on the season.
Â
The Falcons and Rams will wrap up their four-game season series on Thursday in Shepherdstown. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (Fairmont will be the considered the home team on Thursday as the games were originally scheduled to be played in Fairmont.)
