FSU Falls on Day 2 at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dropped the second day of its series with Shepherd on Thursday evening in Shepherdstown.

The Falcons were limited to just three hits offensively and forced a nine-inning scoreless affair in game one before Sarah North hit an RBI single into right field to give the Rams a 1-0 win in extra inning.

The late loss overshadowed a stellar pitching performance by Rachel Bias, who went the distance - allowing just one run on six hits and striking out three batters.

Addie Fullen recorded two of Fairmont's three hits in game one, including a double.

In game two, Shepherd scored six runs in the first four innings to run away with a 9-2 win in the series capper. Abby Burgess plated the only two runs of the day for the Falcons, hitting an RBI single to center field to bring home Carly Clarke and Whitley Mongan for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Burgess recorded two of Fairmont's five hits in game two.

Fairmont State (17-29, 10-18 MEC) will wrap up the regular season this weekend with four games at Duvall-Rosier Field, starting with a doubleheader against the University of Charleston on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Falcons will celebrate senor day on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against West Virginia State - starting at 2 p.m.

FSU is one of three teams vying for the final two spots in the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament from the North Division. The Falcons are currently 10-18 in league play, a game back from Urbana and Notre Dame at 11-17 in the MEC North. Each team has four games remaining in league play over the weekend.

Note: The top three teams from each MEC Division earn a berth to next week's conference tournament.
