FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dropped a pair of home Mountain East Conference games to West Liberty on Monday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field. The doubleheader was postponed from Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Falcons started the scoring in game one, when
Abby Burgess homered to left field in the bottom of the second to put FSU in front 1-0. Later in the inning,
Jenny Stubbs reached home on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage.
Â
However, WLU responded in the top of the third with three runs to put the 'Toppers out in front by a 3-2 margin. Fairmont's
Heidi Hormell knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left center that brought home Stubbs for the second time on the afternoon.
Â
From that point, the game remained tied at 3-3 until the ninth inning when Sydney Bennington hit a home run to center field to provide what would become the game-winning run for the Hilltoppers.
Â
Stubbs led FSU in game one, recording two doubles and two runs scored.
Â
In game two, WLU put up six runs in the top of the third inning to take control early and FSU never really threatened the rest of the day.
Â
Fairmont's runs in the second game came in the bottom of the fourth when Burgess drove home
Abbi Fetty on a double for Fairmont's first run of the game. Later in the inning, Stubbs allowed Hormell to reach home on a sacrifice fly.
Â
Fairmont State returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday afternoon with a MEC North doubleheader against Urbana University. The opening pitch is set for 1 p.m.
