Falcons Drop Doubleheader to Hilltoppers

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dropped a pair of home Mountain East Conference games to West Liberty on Monday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field. The doubleheader was postponed from Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons started the scoring in game one, when Abby Burgess homered to left field in the bottom of the second to put FSU in front 1-0. Later in the inning, Jenny Stubbs reached home on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage.

However, WLU responded in the top of the third with three runs to put the 'Toppers out in front by a 3-2 margin. Fairmont's Heidi Hormell knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left center that brought home Stubbs for the second time on the afternoon.

From that point, the game remained tied at 3-3 until the ninth inning when Sydney Bennington hit a home run to center field to provide what would become the game-winning run for the Hilltoppers.

Stubbs led FSU in game one, recording two doubles and two runs scored.

In game two, WLU put up six runs in the top of the third inning to take control early and FSU never really threatened the rest of the day.

Fairmont's runs in the second game came in the bottom of the fourth when Burgess drove home Abbi Fetty on a double for Fairmont's first run of the game. Later in the inning, Stubbs allowed Hormell to reach home on a sacrifice fly.

Fairmont State returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday afternoon with a MEC North doubleheader against Urbana University. The opening pitch is set for 1 p.m.
