FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State swept Notre Dame College in a Mountain East Conference Northern Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The Falcons got a walk-off home run from
Addie Fullen in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one, and then held off Notre Dame in the seventh inning of game two to sweep the afternoon.
The Falcons improve to 13-19 overall and 6-8 in the league with the wins. NDC falls to 15-18 overall and 7-11 in the MEC.
Game 1
Samantha Hoban broke open a tie game in the bottom of the third inning of game one with a double to left center that scored
Taylor Wells and
Olivia Dunn to clear the bases.
However, Notre Dame scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a one-run lead (3-2) over FSU with just six outs remaining for the Falcons.
FSU tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when senior
Whitley Mongan singled up the middle to allow Wells to touch home plate for the second time on the afternoon. During the next at-bat, Mongan attempted to end the game for FSU but was thrown out at home on the single by
Abbi Fetty.
After FSU stranded two NDC base runners in the top of the eighth, Fullen drilled a solo home run to deep left field to give the Falcons the walk-off 4-3 win to open the day.
Rachel Bias improved to 7-10 on the season after pitching five and two-thirds innings to get the win for FSU on the mound. Bias fanned four batters in the win.
Darby Petersen pitched two and one-thirds inning for FSU before Bias was re-entered into the lineup in the top of the eighth.
Game 2
In the second game of the day, the Falcons scored a run in five of the six innings in which they batted to enter the seventh inning with a commanding 6-2 lead.
Following an first inning solo home run by Notre Dame's Nicole Luciano, Fairmont's
Beth Cook knotted the game at a run apiece after a single up the middle that brought home Hoban.
In the bottom of the second, Wells belted her second career home run, a two-run shot to left field, to give the Falcons a 3-1 advantage early in game two.
Cook struck again for FSU in the bottom of the third with yet another single up the middle that brought home Hoban for the second time in game two.
Mongan pushed Fairmont's lead to 5-1 by hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, and
Carly Clarke answered a fifth inning unearned run by Notre Dame with a fielder's choice in the sixth inning that allowed
Jenny Stubbs to touch home plate, making the score 6-2 in favor of the home-standing Falcons.
Emily Kusmits made things interesting in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to center field that cut Fairmont's four-run lead in half. However, the Falcons stranded the final two Notre Dame base runners of the day to close out the 6-4 win.
Hannah Absalom (4-8) turned in a brilliant pitching performance to get the win, allowing just three earned runs and striking out eight.

FSU will remain at home for a MEC North doubleheader against Urbana on Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.
