WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Fairmont State and West Liberty split a second Mountain East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to remain tied for second-place in the MEC Northern Division with just four league games remaining in the regular season for both teams.
With the score knotted a three runs apiece heading into the eighth inning of game one, the Falcons took their third lead of the afternoon with a pair of runs in the top of the inning.
Ben Myers struck first for FSU with a single that allowed
Darrin Zombro to cross home plate.
Tyler Krantz added the game-winning run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Ted Sova from third.
West Liberty's Vincent Haddox added one more run for the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the eight on an RBI single. However, FSU recorded the final out of the inning in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the 5-4 win in extra innings.
Luke Paull pitched six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits in a no decision. Paull struck out six batters.
Houston Morris (3-0) got the win after facing six batters in the seventh and eighth inning.
West Liberty's Parker Dyson pitched a no-hitter in game two to allow the Hilltoppers to snag a split of the four-game series. Dyson struck out seven batters and walked just three in the 3-0 shutout of the Falcons.
The Falcons will now prepare for a four-game series with Shepherd next weekend, starting with a home doubleheader at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
