Pasierb Nets Goal In 53rd Minute, Lifts FSU Past ABU

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Abigail Pasierb's goal in the 53rd minute proved to be the difference in Friday evening season opener for the Fairmont State women's soccer team, as the Falcons shutout Alderson Broaddus in a 1-0 victory at Multi Sports Performance Stadium in Philippi.

The win marks the first in Brandon Heembrock's tenure as head soccer coach at Fairmont State, as he took over the program last winter.

Pasierb's goal, the second in her FSU career, was assisted by freshman middle fielder, Cassie Whitlatch.

The win over Alderson Broaddus is the second in a row for the Falcons. After dropping a matchup to the Battlers back in 2015, Fairmont's first season as a Division II program, FSU used a penalty kick to top ABU 2-1 last September in Fairmont.

Although the Falcons were outshot 14-7 in the match, the teams combined for just eight shots on goal in the game. FSU goalkeeper Shawna Graham recorded five saves, including two scoring chances in the second half to help the Falcons hold on for the win.

In addition to their advantage in shots, Alderson Broaddus also had six corner kick opportunities, with FSU receiving none. The Falcons committed 13 more fouls in the game (19-6).

Pasierb and Lake Porter each took two shots on the evening, and sophomore Abigail Johnson had one attempt. Louise Welch also came off the bench and took two shot, neither of which were scored as shots on goal.

The Falcons are now idle until Tuesday evening, when they open Mountain East Conference play with a trip to the University of Charleston. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
