Falcon Football Notebook - Week 2 (9/11/17)

The Matchup
- Fairmont State will host the unbeaten Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday evening in the MEC Thursday Night Game of the Week.
- Fairmont State is coming into the game following a 27-24 come-from-behind win over Urbana last Saturday. FSU kicker Sam Keil booted a career-long 45-yard field goal with 1.6 seconds remaining to clinch the win for the Falcons.
- Stephen Turner and Trevon Shorts forced an Urbana fumble with 1:17 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Falcons the ball in field goal range at the Blue Knight 24-yard line. The fumble was recovered by Fairmont's Abu Kai Kai.
- Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan are meeting for the 67th time in program history, dating back to 1908 (FSU 43-22-1).
- The programs have split the last four matchups in the series, with FSU winning the last two contests. In 2015, the Falcons topped the Bobcats at Duvall-Rosier Field, 31-27, prior to FSU rolling to a 31-17 win during a raining afternoon in Buckhannon last October.
- In last year's victory, Fairmont State scored 14 fourth quarter points to improve to 6-0 on the year.
- Last year against the Bobcats, wide receiver Jeff Iweh recorded his first career 100-yard receiving performance of his career with four receptions for 102 yards and a score. Iweh recorded his second career 100-yard receiving performance last Saturday with three catches for 108 yards and a score in Fairmont's win over Urbana.

Offensive Notebook
- Quarterback JuJuan Young-Battle threw his first career touchdown pass in a Fairmont State uniform last Saturday, completing 16-of-33 pass attempts for 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns at Urbana. Young-Battle has not thrown an interception in his first two starts at Fairmont State.
- After rushing for over 100 yards in the first eight games of last season, the Falcons have managed 100 yards rushing just one time in the last six games. FSU managed 96 yards on 27 carries and a score in week one against East Stroudsburg before being limited to 80 yards on 29 carries last Saturday. The Falcons are averaging just 3.1 yards per rush this season.
- The Falcons have had a balanced passing attack during the first two weeks of the season, led by Andre Hall with 10 catches for 150 yards. Shawn Harris has also hauled in nine catches for 124 yards.
- Laurence King and Jeff Iweh both hauled in touchdown passes last weekend against Urbana.
- Through the first two weeks of the 2017 season, the Falcons are just 3-of-23 on third down, including a 0-of-11 performance last Saturday.
- After averaging over 31 minutes in time of possession during the 2016 season, Fairmont State possesses the ball under 26 minutes per game through two games this season.
- Despite not having an interception this season, the FSU offense has fumbled the ball six times, losing four of those as turnovers.
- FSU made a change to their starting lineup at the center position last week, as T.J. Boyd, a 6-1, 305-pound freshman from Chuluota, Fla., made his first career start.

Defensive Notebook
- After allowing 140 yards on 45 carries in a week one home loss to East Stroudsburg, the Falcons limited Urbana to just 73 yards on 48 carries last Saturday.
- The FSU defense has recorded an interception return for a touchdown in both games this season, including an 8-yard interception return by Naiquan Thomas in week one, and a 61-yard return by Jerry Iweh in week two at Urbana.
- In the first two games of the 2017 season, the FSU defense has forced seven turnovers – three fumble recoveries and four interceptions.
- After recording 38 sacks in 12 games during the 2016 season, the FSU defense has recorded just three sacks through the first two weeks of 2017.
- Although the Falcons have just three sacks this season, the Falcons have 19 tackles for loss.
- The Falcons have six players with double-digit tackles this season, led by Marcus Porter with 25 through the first two weeks of the season. Jerry Iweh is second on the team in tackles with 15 solo stops. Iweh, a starting safety for the Falcons, has also returned an interception for a touchdown and has forced and recovered a fumble this season (all against Urbana).
- Redshirt freshman Derian Green also recovered a fumble for the FSU defense against Urbana, his first career fumble recovery in a Fairmont State uniform.
